So I got tired of my dell running so hot....

edited March 2007 in Hardware
Ive had this 850MHz Dell for AGES now, and it always gets to 85C and starts its fan in NO time at all. So I wondered why it always did this, so I figured I'd take off Dell's el-cheapo thermal paste and put on some Arctic Silver.

I take off the heatsink, and find that theres actually nothing between the CPU and the heatsink, other than one of those weird metal pad things.

So I put on WAY too much Arctic Silver (oops... ) but now it takes AGES to hit 85C, even under full load.

  • How'd you get the keyboard out without lifting off that top panel where the power button is? the screws are under that.
  • On that thing, the screws were actually underneath (on the bottom of the system), and there was a (K) next to them.. you unscrew those and the keyboard lifts right out.
