  • Nice spam. Don't come back.
  • I've told countless spammers the same and shall tell you, too:

    1) No porn spam, please
    2) I doubt anyone will click on these links
    3) You posted in the 'operating system' discussion forum..

Wait, you don't use the 'free sexy movie' or the 'reverse home mortgage' operating system?

I thought everyone used those platforms, I'm so behind on operating system developments!
  • Very funny

How the post I just replaced here was posted on this forum I don't know-it was posted in file trading.

Eh, couldn't help it, maybe we should add a captcha to the forum posting page for guest posting or something like that to help stem the flow of spam posts.
  • Or ban the spammers' ips?

Yeah but in order to ban the IPs they have to post which means the administrators would have to ban them and then perform clean up duty which is wholly unnecessary if we just do a captcha test for guest posting.

If they post and Google indexes the forum before cleanup, their goal is achieved and they get a higher Google score thanks to our community linking to them.
  • You people are fucking dumb. They won't reply, they're bots.
  • At least I found the main site:
    UmaxSearch.Com
I found the ip, but lost it.
  • IP banned and links removed.

In the future, just leave the SPAMs alone. I regularly check all "new posts" and will easily discover an SPAMs. If I miss any then Duff or Fish will see it. If you reply and start a conversation, then it's harder to just delete the thread.

If you wish to delete the thread, by all means do so Q, we were just having a bit of fun n' discussion as it kind of jump started some talk.
  • It's fine. Now that the links are deleted, the SPAMmer can't derive much benefit from this thread.

I'm actually kind of interesting in this experiment of turning SPAM-posts into legitimate threads.

  • I think my problem with IP based banning is that...
    • If it's dynamic, we can ban an innocent user and the guilty will be able to come back easily
    • Sometimes the spam source is actually an innocent user who's been infected
    • Banning proxy IPs can eliminate what some users call their only option for contacting the world
    • It gets to be too troublesome and hard to maintain unless you blanket ban an entire IP range which only causes more problems and potential loss of users
I mean, I understand where and when it has it purposes but for me, I prefer a more proactive than reactive approach to solving the problem.

Yes, that is true. Which is why when I ban IPs on my network, I usually refresh the ban list after a month or so. I have to have autoban on my FTP servers though, or people come in and try to login as "administrator" with random passwords for some reason... I've never seen that before, but lately it's been happening to my server. So my configuration of FileZilla bans the IPs long enough for them to lose interest (a week) then unbans them again.

That I would tend to doubt in this case.

I fail to understand why anyone absolutely needs to use a proxy.

    That I won't doubt.

Such as what? Asking them nicely to stop spamming the forums? tongue.gif

  • People use proxies because theyre OMGPARANOID.... or at school or something where the site isn't exactly easy to get onto.

You too? I got hit with that almost IMMEDIATELY, Fish says he's had that happen for a while now (So much so it's in his MotD). I banned the ones I saw doing it.

As to the forum's IP banlist, except for the really obvious ranges, I think I'll try and unban the standalones after a little while, but I'm going to ask the other 2 1st.

I have FileZilla Server set to ban any IP address that has 25 bad login attempts per hour for 48 hours. Usually by then though, they'll get a new IP and start hammering me with that... so yeah. I had it set to 10, but then I got myself banned by entering the wrong pass, hitting enter, and then walking away. tongue.gif So, I set it a little higher. wink.gif

But yeah, I don't even know what people are doing on my Linux servers, I was just able to catch it in Windows. Fortunately, I don't even have an account called administrator. lol.gif

  • Alex, you are retarded. End of case.
  • I wouldn't be quite that harsh about it, but we all saw it the first time.

Ok, trying not to be less harsh.

Alex, the bots are not ever going to reply to that. Bots are computer programs scouting the web to send a certain message on forums that allow guest posting, and sometimes they can sign up too.

    ^ That works, I guess.
  • Oops, that wasn't what I was thinking of. I thought you were getting annoyed at the multiple quotes.

    -Q

PS. WRT the telling off SPAMmers: We ALL know it doesn't work, but it's a nice relief to annoyance. They're possibly the ultimate flammables.
