IE4 Problem on 2000

I managed to get ie4 on windows 2000, but have 2 problems.

1) Address appears as A&ddress.

2) When I type an address in, I get:

http://www.zarachfiles.truehost.co.uk/2/ie4.bmp

    Why the hell would you want IE4 on something that already has later versions? :|

    IE6 froze every second, and had a bug. IE6 and Outlook Express 6 had a bug.As for a bitmap, why not?

    Please, only reply if you know how to rectify the two faults!

    IE4 was never designed to work on 2000, therefore you can't expect it to work without issues.

    And BMP is *huge*, that image took a while to load.

    Not on mine but sorry. Should I upload it as a gif instead? Or as a jpg/jpeg?

    BMP's are huge. Your BMP is 2 MB. Use PNG (or JPG or GIF).

    Anyway, back to your problem, I see you have Firefox running in the taskbar. Why not use that?

    It's slow starting up and causes all other programs to freeze. I had to set my homepage to google as I can only use links to access sites. I have to avoid the address bar as the problem is with that, including A&ddress instead of Address. How can I fix both problems?

    Promptly place your tower into a waste receptacle and go to a store and buy a new one.

    Maybe its cause you're using Windows 98?

    Nope. The windows 98 laptop's HDD died, I haven't bothered to replace it. I'm using Windows 2000 pro on a Sony Vaio PCG-f808k. It has an Intel Pentium 3 X86 Family 6 Stepping 8 Model 3. Anyway, any suggestions. I need IE4. IE6 has a bug, firefox crashes my laptop and Netscape doesn't display web pages correctly as it's an old version. IE4 does, as I tested winworld via anonymouse-I use it now as my address bar.

    Err, if IE 6 has a bug, what about IE 5 (Which ships with 2000) and 5.5, which you can upgrade to. Do THOSE have said problem?

    Did you try typing in the ENTIRE address, EG "http://www.archive.org/" rather then just "archive.org" ?

    Why would you want to use IE 4? At least IE 5.5 can display most things
    right. You should go for IE 5.5 or Opera.

    Ok, well first of all, I must say that I'm somewhat pissed off by the responses in this thread.

    He had questions/problems and all anyone did was suggest he use something different or that his computer was shit.

    And he says right in the topic that it was 2000 and not 98.

    Now, on to the problems.

    Q is right, have you tried IE 5 or 5.5?

    The only thing I can think about with the "A&ddress" thing, is that "&" is or was a way to identify the keyboard shortcut needed to access the address bar via the keyboard.

    I know that, by default, 2000 has it set to hide keyboard shortcuts. Maybe if you turned that setting off it would get rid of that?

    Desktop properties > Effects Tab > Uncheck "Hide keyboard navigation indicators until I use the Alt key"

    Now, on to the other error, that was probably an old bug that had been fixed in later versions. Try adding the "http://" part yourself instead of just the domain name as Q also suggested.

    Oh and I beleive that the "" bbcode only works for jpeg, gif, and png. For quick screen shots, jpeg is good, unless reading text is an issue, then maybe png would be better.

    Side note, for the BMP detractors: 2000's paintbrush only supports BMPs. I remembered HATING that (Hence my installing ACDSee on the old installs), and have just recently rediscovered it, hence the lack of screenshots from the new laptop.

    You are talking about IE 4 and IE6 but I mean, there is 5.0 and 5.5. And I remember 5.x being stable. That is your best bet and why would u even bother with 4?
