SuSE 9 and the Filesystems

OK, I've installed SuSE 9 and used it pretty welll, but one day none of the mounted disks appeared on the desktop. So I thought 'Grr'. After a while I restarted and then BANG, a billion things failed at startup. I later discovered via a Live Eval CD that my /etc/fstab had blanked itself! Nothing mounted on boot! I managed to add the / FS so I can get to the runlevel 1 # prompt and can execute commands,

What now?

  • ===Aftermath===

    I've reinstalled SuSE and discovered that the reason I couln't mount / as EXT2 or 3 was that it WASN'T, it was ReiserFS (3).

    Just something to remember.

  • What is ReiserFS? Is it an alternative to the EXT 2 or 3`? Is it better than EXT 2/3?
  • ReiserFS is an open FS for Linux. It is an alternative to both, whether or not it's better, I'm not sure. I've used it a bit and think it's pretty good.
