How do I get DOS 3.1 created on a 5-1/4" floppy from the img downloads here?

The DOS downloads are nice, but they are img files and you need special software that will write back the original bootable DOS installation disks on 360K floppies. However, this is a problem because newer computers, even WIN 98 cannot recognize a 360K floppy, only the 1.2 MB floppy. Has anyone actually done this yet? I am trying to reinstall DOS 3.1 on an original PCXT that has only a 360K floppy and 1.2 MB floppy and a 30MB harddrive that needs DOS installed again, since it will not boot. HELP!!!

  • People write these disk images to real disks all the time.

To write a 360k disk image to a genuine 360k disk using a Windows 9x “tweener” system:

Download and install WinImage for Windows 98: http://www.winimage.com/download.htm Attach a 360k floppy drive to your Windows 98 system. Then write the image to the target disk with WinImage.

Windows 98 fully supports 360k floppy drives. The first that does not is Windows XP. Due to differences in the drive heads, 360k disks written in 1.2mb drives are not readable in 360k drive (unless you thoroughly degauss the target disk first.)

Also note that Winimage does not recognize DOS 1.x or non-DOS disks. For those you have to use the DOS based ImageDisk program. (Runs in real mode Win9x DOS 7.x). There are also a number of DOS based programs for reading and writing IMG files.
