  • Microsoft Windows 1.01 1.xx/1.xy was Compiled on 1985-09-03 by CompuData/Tulip was found BetaArchive. They convinced Microsoft to allow them to ship a pre-release version for Windows 1.00 from September 1985 with their machines. This Beta Build between Premiere Edition and the Final Edition.

  • So... This version is the real Windows 1.0?

All of the pre-releases were labeled as "1.00". Somewhere there was an official Comdex launch document that clearly stated the first public release version, available at launch, was indeed "1.01". So, no, Premiere Edition is not what people would consider a "1.00" release.

  • There could've been some pre-releases branded as Windows V1.00 since the boot screen that came with a Windows 1.0 MDSI Genius driver says 1.00:

  • A "runtime" version is not a retail release. It came with software like a WYSWIG viewer for Word, just serving as foundation for the graphical display. The application would be run directly in place of the usual program starter.

I know that and I never said it is a retail version. The runtime that came with Windows 1.01 SDK says 1.01 on the boot screen. All other runtimes are based on the 1.01 SDK runtime if I recall correctly so this one is either a customized boot screen or a leftover from a beta branded as 1.00.

I did some research, and found a version of Windows with a totally different name called Microsoft Interface Manager Internal Test Release 3. Maybe that could be the original Windows 1.0, a fake version, or an old release?

Here's some info about it: https://virtuallyfun.com/2010/07/19/microsoft-interface-manager/

It was made for a fake screenshot competition, based on the BYTE magazine build. The original site is here:

  • so, BetaArchive wiki states:
    "
Microsoft originally distributed it to key players in the computer industry to prove their product wasn't vaporware, as the release date had been delayed several times since the original announcement on 10 November 1983. Before releasing the official final version, designated as version 1.01, the memory management code had to be completely rewritten; this would be the key difference between Premiere and 1.01.
    "

so it's not actually a '1.00', they just used a prototype of 1.01 they had and distributed to some people/companies as freeware, then they released the complete version some time later (1.01)
