MSDOS 2.11 backslash and UK keyboard question

Hi. I am new here so hope this is the correct forum.

I downloaded Microsoft MS-DOS 2.11 [NCR OEM] then created an XT machine in 86Box and installed it. Everything is fine and all the files copied across but I cannot use a backslash. If I omit the directory separator and enter COPY *.* C:MYDIR for example it works. This DOS version is way before my time so I wondered is this normal behavior or do I need to use a desktop PC with a proper keyboard? (I am currently using a laptop computer).

In DOS 3.2 running on a virtual PC/AT the backslash works. Changing the keyboard options in 86Box doesn't make a difference. Using a forward-slash doesn't work.

My second question is, there appears to be no KEYBOARD.SYS with DOS 2.1 and I can't find a configuration program so how did users get a UK keyboard? I appreciate this may be an 86Box issue but I thought I would ask here first.

Cheers. Paul (dmeddings)

  • Hi. OK problem partly solved.

Backslash is mapped to the [~#] key (sorry, I really thought I had tried all of them!).

As for the UK keyboard I read a forum post that suggested IBM may have given XT buyers a floppy disk at the time of purchase with keyboard drivers suitable for the country of purchase? Or maybe OEM suppliers did that?

I'm going to try some of the other OEM versions.
