New XP Install Went Bad

edited December 2004 in Software
Posting from my Microtel.
I just installed XP on my demon HP and chose new install but it was
too big. It said all my stuff would be lost but it wasn't.
I finally got it down to 3.36 gigs by deleting stuff.
Here's two things that are too big:
******************************
pagefile.sys Properties - 720 MBS - won't delete
hiberfil.sys Properties - 479 MBS

3.36 gigs
************************

Any ideas?

  • Pagefile.sys is the swap file, you can't delete it.
But you can set it not so much.
go to my computer's properties, click advanced then settings.
Go to Advanced tab and click Change
Click Custom Size and set it to 200Mb
Hiberfil.sys is a hibernation file, if you dont use hibernation you may turn it off.
Go to control panel, then go to power options.
Go to Hibernate tab and uncheck "Enable hibernation"
This will free up some space.
  • turn off hibernate in power properties

Wasn't that already said by me?

Thanks Slash but I made a new primary partition and started over.
I hope i don't need that but when I'm back on a monitor I can see,
    I'm going to copy that.

It wouldn't boot to the CD so I tried the 6 floppy install and it didn't
work. I couldn't get into the bios with delete or esc but finally got in
with f1 or f2, I'm not sure which.
I set it to boot from CD first but all I got was "click any key to boot from
    CD but that's good enough.

It's installed, let me see what I can do with it.

oh yeh so it was.... danm
  • Shouldn't the hibernation file mirror the ram size? What kind of video do you have? Is it getting shared ram from your physical ram? If so I'd guess you have 512MB of ram...
  • hibernation file is uusally the same size as ram

Slash, WTF are you doing blindly recommending a 200 MB page file, if you don't even know how much RAM he has?

Thump, the page file has to be set to at least 1.0x times your RAM. If you're low on RAM, use 1.5x.
He has a lack of freespace so it's best for him because his HDD needs a maximum freeup..

What good is unused space on his hard drive if he can't run certain programs because his Windows complains about VM?
I guess it's something I don't know yet but what's VM? And it really
complained about VM I don't think.
Anyway it's done and I'm writing from the new install. I installed the new
OS on a smaller partition first and then restored the demon OS that
was so big there wasn't enough room for another bootable partition.

It was crowded but I got it in and can double boot now that the smaller one is first. I'm not worried but I've used about 2.9 gigs now and only
have about a gig left. I may just keep testing stuff and then restoring
the smaller disk image. I'm running a test on Google desdtop search
and it's on another partition so probably won't crowd this one.

    Thanks everyone!

  • VM= Vitural Memory or Swap File, Page file.

    Alternate Abr.=

Vitural Machine, but that is not what it was used in this case.

Thanks James Babb. I was afraid Tomchu thought I was using a Virtual
Machine but not enough to post back that I wasn't using it.

It didn't complain about the virtual memory, it was just one of the things
I noticed that was "bloated". I abandeoned that OS copy in the end.
I wasn't able to cut down the size enough to use anything else.

Yeah, it took a few gigs of space one my 40GB hard drive. Depending on drive size the amount used varies. I think 10% is the most space it will take.
  • and when i have a 20GB drive 2Gb is a lot
  • you can udjust it bod..... mine was set to 12% (the max O_O) so i set it to like 2% i might as well just turn it off though......
  • I set mine to 5%, on a 60GB drive, 6GB can be used for better
  • mine is turned off im not woried about it. anyway an xp install going bad?? i cant see how that could happen lol
