How does AIM work?

Maybe my question seems ridiculous but can I ask? How does AIM work? Has it its own protocol or what?
And that's something which bothers me too.
CaptainNemo has just aim'ed me and sent an image.

Got it? Then can you answer...
Telnet... does aim use telnet ports and/or protocols or what? How AIM is connected with Telnet?

    Why does RPCSS have the AIM ico some of the times?

    Anywany AIM uses TOC and OSCAR, which have their own ports, NOT 23.

    Then why it writes "telnet" in remore address column?

    When RpcSs has an AIM icon, it's probably a process tree, i mean some instances of RpcSs were requested by AIM.

    Then why does it write ":telnet" for AIM, but not ":http" or similar for Opera when it connects to port 80? Surely something that bothered to interpret Telnets port whould do the same for the web?
