  • Pro/PureFTPd?

  • Use something else, not KDE.
  • What distro are you planning on using? If it's Slackware, choose A, AP, D, KDE, N, and X. Last time I checked that's around a gig.

Yea he can use whatever he likes but every user can suggest using xfce or icewm instead of kde on a server.
  • why would you need X on a server?
  • That's what I'm thinking. Just use the BASH Promt.
  • Personally I've never seen a linux server running a GUI...
  • because my friends...i also use my server as a workstation, and as delightful as text based AIM is....

then its not a server :P
  • It's a workstation with server tools.

My server has no mouse or monitor. Just a keyboard for it to bootup.
  • mine has a network cable and power..... thats all it needs
  • My BIOS stops on error unless I tell it other wise.

I can't tell it otherwise becuase I have no monitor to do so.
  • i turned off error reporting :P
  • I have no monitor. You really think it's that easy without seeing what you're doing.

  • SaMBa if you have Windows shares.

  • or just use FTP
  • That's about all you need for a server. Anything else shouldn't be needed.

    Apache
    PHP
    Perl
    MySQL
    Samba
    Pro/PureFTPd

Your the one who thinks you can hookup a network cable and power to a PC and whola! You have a server...
  • Uhh Ridgeback, I plug the toaster into my ass and get online almost every day. How do you think I'm POSTING THIS?!

I like Samba, i like windows shares cuz its nice to be able to get at my personal doc folder, htdocs, and /home (where hosted ppls directories are) without ftping.

i use CSH with PuTTY to go in, i DONT use a gui, and i dont have a monitor or keyboard hooked up on my svr, but probly will when i put it in the basement.
  • Gah....I've tried both Linux (2 distro's) and FreeBSD. I didnt like either one. I guess i am just a windows person.
  • having windows on a server kinda seems pointless, like u gots a gui and all that junk that never gets used
