File Manager is now free software

Microsoft released it under the MIT license. The tags in the repo are for an "original" (close to original, just tweaks to get it building under modern Windows) and "enhanced 10.0" with new features.

  • Hu. That is very.... random of them. Is this the real deal or another lookalike? If it is the real deal, then what version does it match? The 3.0, 3.1, 3.11FWG, NT 3.x, and NT 4 all had their own minor differences and enhancements.

File Manager really originated in OS/2 and got moved to Windows after the IBM split. I have been wondering if it was a direct port of the OS/2 version or a clean rewrite.

Also, I have heard reports that there was an early beta/demo release of Winfile and Program Manager for Windows 2.x (supposedly downloadable from the Microsoft BBS, but copies don't seem to have survived). Any chance of recompiling this for Windows 2.x?

  • Dang, Microsoft is up something. First Windows 10 became the "last" operating system but still get updates with patches and new features for free and now the release open source versions of their software. Did Bill Gates finally make enough money to retire?

  • WINFILE source is taken from the NT 4 code, though the version specific comments I can find suggests the last changes were done for NT 3.51J (Japanese) before the recent Win10 x64 friendly update. Long file names were rather mandatory for its intended use.

Anyone intending on building on it should expect to increase size of the data structures. For example, the number of clusters on a drive is stored in a double word (32-bit) and thus likely to be inadequate for a drive of 16+ TB.

Looks to be Win32 sources only so no easy Win 2 version out of this.

  • It possible use file manger source code for Windows NT 4.0 put on Windows 2.0 SDK and Windows 3.0 SDK. A BetaArchive member of yksoft use Minesweeper Source Code from Windows NT 4.0 Source Code put on Windows 2.0 and Windows 3.0.

  • this new File Manager app for Windows 10 requires the Visual C++ 2015 runtimes in order to work:

He already did... and hasn't been the CEO of M$ for a while actually. Satya Nadella is the current CEO

Yeah he's had a reduced role since 2000 when he stepped down from CEO. Ballmer took over CEO role until 2014 when it passed to Satya Nadella. Gates did serve as an interim CEO between Ballmer and Nadella. Now Gates is just an adviser and focuses mainly on his philanthropic endeavors through the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation.
