Select was the volume licensing version of the OS, distributed to companies that purchased 250 or more licences.
Just like the volume licensing versions of Windows XP do not require activation, the select version of Windows 2000 doesn't require a product key at all.
Windows 98SE's Select version is odd though. It needs a product key that isn't used by the retail/OEM versions. In such large enterprises, a network install with a batch file containing the product key would have done the job I guess.
