[REQUEST] Older Versions of 3DS MAX

Hi all,

I believe this thread was made in late 2016, and was wondering if we can get it going again. I have tried to get 3ds max 3 and 4 for quite some time now and was wondering if anyone has these versions? I would even settle for normal 3ds max(the original kinetix) release on windows NT, this is a link to the vetusware one, but I'm still unsure how to get passed that stupid dongle.

Any help is appreciated

  • I was unable to find 3D Studio MAX versions 3 and 4, but I found version 2 on these warez discs:
    https://archive.org/details/cdrom-twilight-018
Go to "show all", click on view contents on twilight18a.iso, then download 3DSMAX2.RAR.

I also found version 5 on Twilight release 76. Released October 2002 so a little recent but we do have some 2002-03 software now so I think I'll let it slide:
    https://archive.org/details/dvdrom-twilight-076

In this case you'll have to download the entire DVD to get to it though.

It's warez so you won't have to worry about any dongle protection.

Wow this is epic. Downloading, thank you for your help! Is twilight like a demo CD or is this the full version?

  • They're the full versions, with serials and/or cracks included. They used to be illegal but now they're abandonware. :)

Looks like I installed the sentinel drivers for cdrom-twilight-018 I guess I should restart my system to retry.

There are two separate installers for Windows 95-Me and Windows NT 4.0 (sentw95.exe and setupx86.exe). Windows 2000 and later use a different driver model so it wouldn't be compatible (unless you find the win2k sentinel driver, if there is such a thing).

As long as the sentinel drivers are loaded it should work. They should be after a reboot.

It wasn't particularly obvious to me then but if anyone is interested, 3D studio max version 4 is on this warez DVD. I found this while looking for solidworks:
    https://archive.org/details/dvdrom-twilight-058

The picture is the cover of the CD-ROM version with fewer programs (~1.5 GB vs 4.2 GB) but the ISO is the DVD, which threw me off.

Please note that the menu that is supplied with twilights before release 60 are very buggy with Windows NT-based OSes (constant ARF dialogs and executables opening and closing) and only works properly with 9x.

This is the full list of programs: twilight-cd.com/releases/2001-2/twilight-058-dvd/ (it's from March 2001 so the Windows XP is not the final version)

Twilight 58 actually contains a 3DS Max 4.0 model library and tutorial set. Twilight 57 contains the program itself.

    Hello friends,

    I can offer 3D Studio Max R3.1

    It includes Character Studio 2.2

Both are installed on my Win95C machine, and run without a problem.

    Enjoy:

Hey, do you think you could provide step-by-step instructions on how to install the sentinel drivers for 3DS MAX 2?

I'm trying to get this to run on Win 7 under Win 95 compatibility but I really don't know what to do. I tried installing the drivers but I cannot for the life of me wrap my head around any of this.

If I click on 3dsmax.exe it always tells me the hardware lock is not working! no matter how many times I try to install Sentw95.exe and reboot.

I'm an aspiring 3D artist and I'm fascinated by mid 90s 3D so I'd love to try this out.

You will have to install in windows 9x/NT/2000/XP. The sentinel drivers are of a vxd/nt driver model type that will not work in Windows Vista and above.

hmm, it complains about me not having the 3dsmax 1 dongle plugged in to my upgrade key (of course, i don't have any of that) in windows 2000 and 2003, which come with sentinel drivers. Maybe you'd have better luck with 9x or NT 4.0, but you may need to run the applicable executable to install the sentinel drivers in either system (respectively sentw95.exe or setupx86.exe) if they're not already there.

Ahhh, shame. Well, thanks for responding!

  • OK, so I just installed 3DS MAX 2 on my Windows NT4 desktop. The sentinel driver installation through setupx86.exe worked and the program runs.

So yeah, run it on NT4 with real hardware (support did go up to GF 6000 series and I don't think OpenGL support really exists for the OS in VMs). Of course it's also compatible with 9x but it is professional software that one would have never taken their chances with on that deck of cards.

Now I'm going to address 3DS MAX R3.1.

The instructions in the nfo are backward: you must patch the executable before you can enter the authentication code or else it whines about dongles.

Direct3D support is broken on, at least, my ATi Radeon Mobility 7500 using win98 driver. Use OpenGL when Direct3D is problematic.

Assembly knowledge is a step above non-existent but it appears that it just bypasses sentinel checks altogether instead of trying to emulate them as in MAX 1/2. So you wouldn't be bound to NT4/9x and could give it a try on say, Windows 10 or using WINE.

And it is much easier to work with than Softimage|3D 4 and XSI 3.x; the former had an incredibly sluggish GUI (on a Xeon X5670 machine? come on!!) and the latter's crack relied on parallel ports the workstation didn't have, probably to emulate its dongle.
