trying to install red hat 5.2 restarts the system
so i'm trying to replace a solaris installation with red hat 5.2 (because reasons™). anyway, every time i try to install it, it tryes to load the kernel but then it just reboots the computer. one thing thats worrying is that is says: "To install or upgrade a system running Red Hat Linux 2.0 or later, press the key", so

Are we talking about the original 1998 Red Hat 5.3, and not Enterprise Linux?
If so, then we are talking about something that is very unstable, incomplete, and buggy. Using this era of Linux is not much unlike trying to drive a jalopy that you built yourself with used mismatched parts down the highway. If something goes wrong, you were expected to code a fix to it yourself.
You will need to use appropriate well-supported hardware of the time. Nothing too cutting edge. Probably PCEM or 86box with a generic Pentium 1 emulation and a low end video card would be the best bet to get it to run.
