Can't boot PC-DOS 3.00 from Hard Drive

I have tried on both 86box and Qemu
The floppy works just fine, but it will hang after saying "Booting C>>C"
The installation procedure i use is as follows

FDISK
FORMAT C: /S
COPY *.* C:

This works for other versions, like 3.30, but it doesn't seem to work on 3.00

  • What is the geometry of the drive you are giving it? i seem to recall that some early versions of dos do not like more than 17 or so sectors per tack, which was the standard on IBM PC MFM hard drives.

I believe you can manually specify the geometry for a new hard disk image in 86Box, but not sure about QEMU.
  • It works here in 86Box.

  • Fixed the issue, QEMU makes hard drives with 63 sectors instead of the 17 needed

@Mr_Myth As an alternative for me in 86box, I use sys c: right after formatting the drive, then I already copy files.
