There's an IMD file in the backup that I was able to convert to IMG: dsktrans -otype raw -format pcw180 -stubborn disk01.imd disk01.img. Then I was able to boot it in PCEM. It boots into "SpeedStart CP/M" which (among other differences) uses .STM rather than .CMD as the extension for executable files. The boot file (SPEED.STR) is obfuscated by having every word in the code segment XORed with 0xFFFF, and LOGO.STM is obfuscated by having every word in the code segment XORed with 0xA5B4 -- which is why it won't run natively under CP/M-86 unless you deobfuscate it first.
  • When I tried it before, I could not get it to boot from an IMG file. That extra sector appeared to be a lame form of copy protection.
  • I had to use -stubborn and -format pcw180 to force it to output a regular 180k IMG file (with 9 sectors on each track). An IMG file with only 8 sectors per track won't do it, because the second stage boot sector is omitted.
  • The .IMD file seems to boot and run OK in 86Box.
