Yes, it did. Some years ago I've found a distribution of Charisma 2.0 in Novosibirsk State University on an ancient hard drive. It was a folder of 6.4MB, quite large for those times. Now I've tested it, it installs and works. Under Windows 2.x EMS disable is required (win /n), otherwise it fails to run. It has its own EMS memory manager. Don't know how the original media looked like, whether it was a CD, floppies or something else.

"found a distribution of Charisma 2.0 in Novosibirsk State University"

Decades ago, there was so much stuff on the soviet bloc era ftp sites. Just anon login - way crazy.

When I was in hospital for a damaged kidney from motocross racing, there were two Russian fellas in the post surgery room with me - much older than me - one worked for diplomat agency, other was scientist at Joint Institute for Nuclear Reasearch.

Anyway, both spoke good enough English, and the scientist fella said he and colleagues would welcome any software uploaded to their ftp site.

So I did: to ftp.jinr.su and later ftp.jinr.ru.

Maybe 10 years ago, I checked, and it was all still there.
  • Very nice. But two of the compressed clipart files were incorrectly converted to ZIP. Do you have the original LZH files?
  • Yeah, I've noticed that too. I have no additional files, the folder is "as-is", exactly the same I got it years back. Looks like the zip files were previously taken from another source, like BBS or something. Can we just fix them by converting to LZH so the installer could extract from there?

Version 2.1 doesn't use LZH archives anymore. We can try to find version 2.01, which also existed.

I know one Russian scientist who worked in ICMMG in Novosibirsk in 1989-1991, we once talked about a huge raise of interest in computing in the late USSR, when it became possible to make international phone calls to access BBSes in Europe/US and get shipments from all over the world so they spent days and nights discovering US software. They discovered GUIs and were doing crazy things like running Windows/GEM/OS/2 on a ES-1849 which was the Soviet clone of IBM PC AT. And I remember he complained he got latest Micrografx software and other Windows software by mail but that heavy software turned out to be too demanding for ES-1849.

I'll contact this man when I get a chance.

    Let me know, OK?
Wouldn't let me upload with lzh extension. Rename with LZH extension.

  • Ok, my suspicion was some of the clipart files could have been corrupted, perhaps from someone trying to "fix" a damaged archive, but testing them they all look like they are present and intact and they are very similar to the ones in 2.1 anyway.
