Best server tools for Windows and Linux

edited December 2004 in Software
Heres a list of great programs and tools to turn a home PC into a pro like server. I know must of you hate having a spare PC that takes up to much room . Meaning it''s a whole PC with monitor, keyboard and mouse. You can just use the PC it self and do away with the rest unless you have to config something that the programs im's going to list won't do the job.

Before I start listing off here I should tell you if your using a older PC say 166MHz or bellow you should use NT4 server or Linux. If you have 166MHz or more with over 64MB ram then use 2000 server/pro or Linux. Do not use XP since you won't beable to enjoy the eye candy with out the monitor and you know the old saying "more free resources are better then none". If you have a really kick ass system then try oiut Windows 2003 or some server distro of Linux. Ok enough blabing.

Windows
OpenSSH - This will let you control the Server by command prompt, enough to move files around, deleting files, starting and stoping services. It's freeware

Radmin - Lets you control the whole PC as if you were at the Server's keyboard. This is Comericalware

Sendmail for Windows - CGI like script or EXE that works as a SMTP. Costs money and hard to find a crack.

Blat - Works like sendmail but it's free.

Wget - A text based downloader that comes in handy with OpenSSH but also uses very little resources. This is also freeware.

MySQL - Great database server for PHP scripts or other. Do I say Freeware!

Apache/Apache2 - The best HTTPD server around and works great. Use Apache for NT4 and Apache2 for Win2k or higher. Freeware!

PERL - This is used for websites but also there are some great scripts that will let you use Administrive tools. Freeware!

CYGWIN - A Linux like suit that let you use many and wonderful Linux programs with out having Linux installed. Even lets you use X-Win with your fav window manager. It's Free

Webmin - Great configure tool that works though your web-browser. Need CYGWIN for this, FREE!

Helmet - Kinda like Webmin but works with just Windows. Comericalware.

PHP - Great for pro like websites. There are many great premade scripts like PHPbb and PHP-Nuke. Free!

BulletProof FTP - This FTP server seems to be the best for windows. It's also known as G6 FTP. Comericalware.

Serv-U FTP - A step lower then B-FTP but it gets the job done. Comericalware.

Heres the Linux list. Most distros already have most of theses.

Apache
MySQL
PERL
PHP
OpenSSH
VNC
Wget
SendMail
BLAT
Webmin
TCL

  • So...for a P166 with 64 MB and a 1.85 gig hard drive, you would recommend Linux/*BSD?
  • I'd reccemend Windows NT 4 with Apache 1.3 and BPFTP server.
  • im planing on redoing my p233 to be a place where i can dump files again this time without all the crap attached to the pc. it only has 32 mb of ram and wil be used only for the purpose of dumping crap for later use on it (not for public because of my connection) any suggestions?
  • Look up to my other post.

That's my Windows solution. You could go with NetBSD or FreeBSD if you know what you're doing.
  • On my server, which funnily enough is a P166 with 64MB RAM and NT4, i use the following programs:
    Abyss Web Server
    PHP4
    Serv-U FTP
    ArgoSoft Mail Server
    MySQL
    SigFree
  • When I had my old server, I used Windows NT 4, Apache 1.3, PHP 4 and BPFTP Server. Now it's the same, just with 2003.
  • 2k3 is good, runs pretty fast on a 233

NT 4 always bombed out when i tried to install the network driver.
  • Try another NIC or use BSD. You use NT 3.51 also.
  • I'll try 3.51, if that doesn't work, I'll get BSD.
  • The user and all related content has been deleted.
  • I'm getting 2000 now. it might work if I only use it for a server and minor development work.

  • And you know what's really strange? That IP was used by both Winboy and nightice!

    -Q
  • WT FUCKING F?!
  • lol, thats a very, VERY strange "coincedince", or is it..?

that would be slow on my filedumper which has 32 mb of ram, (i cant find any simular ram at the moment.) i run slackware on it right now and im thinking about trying something else on it later on.
  • win2003 wont install with less than 128.... i "borrowed" some ram from my bros comp, he still hasnt got it bcak ;)
