Finally setting up a server...

edited January 2005 in Software
Alright, so I've decided that it's time to set up a server of my own. I finally got 2000 on the HP last night, but it was too slow (and the installation so fucked up) that I deleted it. Right now it's running FreeDOS. I'm currently converting it back to FAT so i can try NT4 again. If that doesn't work, any suggestions for what to try? I'd prefer to keep my DOS install, also.

  • What's this gonna do? if it's just light web and FTP, then NT4 or 2000 + AWS and FZSvr or BPFTPSvr!

  • Light web and FTP, yes. I'm installing NT4 now. It better not fuck up on my network card again.
  • It didn't fuck up. I think last time I fubared the OEMSETNT.INF when trying to get it to work with NT 3.1.
  • I'm gonna keep there here incase you need help on it

  • It says that "A device attached to the system is not functioning." WTF?! It was working not that long ago with 2k!
  • Check event viewer?

Maby you installed the wrong driver / set the wrong parameters for it if it gave you the options.
  • That's what was in the Event Viewer. It's definitely the right driver (came off of the included disk). The only parameter to set is the media type (10Baset, 10Baset Full Duplex, etc.)
  • Fuck. The back fan died. Looks like I'm down to VPC.

Are you saying that you're going to use VPC to be used to host a client system to work as a server???

That sounds fucked up and just wrong. Might as well turn your current system into a server.
  • Nah. I was just thinking quickly and stupidly. What I'll probably do instead is install BSD or something on my 2nd HD and reboot into that for server use.
  • So a server with a 5% uptime? LMAO
  • No, a server by request.

  • or doom 3 in WINE
  • Doesn't VMware make some version of it's products especially for running servers in VMs?

PS. Hey! VMware Workstation 5 is in beta!
  • i tried to get vmware off P2P and i got some crap about not running a server version of windows
  • You might've gotten the svr version(s), I know workstation runs on XP Pro and 2000 Pro.

  • Workstation runs on XP Home also.

Q - I'll look into VPC or VMWare server. Those seem, though, to be made for running lots of servers (like 10 at once) on one host machine.

  • I installed Slack 8.1. Much easier than trying to set something up in Windows. So, later, I'll configure my no-ip and router.
  • If you need help with setting up your HTTPD and if you're planing to run a SQL server check out www.devside.net/web/server/linux
For setting up a FTP server try this out http://www.linuxnetmag.com/en/issue7/m7secureftp1.html
  • I'm only using Apache a a verification tool - if you can get to the HTTP, then my server is up....the FTP article doesn't seem to cover vsftpd. vsftpdrocks.org seems like the place to look.
  • Wouldn't it be easier to run AWS? It's alot smaller and if all it's going to do is say "The server is up" I don't think it'll have any real problems.

Well heres a help guide for setting up VSFTPD.

Well, it comes with Apache preconfigured, that's a big plus...
  • True, true, it just sounded like AWS would server your purposes well.

    Apache is simple to configure.

Once you install it, just stick the documents in the htdocs folder and look at them on port 80.

Changing ports and htdocs folder is simple.

Now, actually tweaking it and using addons and more advanced features would be hard for some AWS users.
  • why 81? and having it in the htdocs folder is annoying, i find it easier to have it in something like "C:\www" then you dont have to go rootling around to find the folder all the time
  • Well then you edit your httpd.conf. I was just stating that Apache somes usable out of the box when you first install it. But you should still tweak it.

    And it is 80, typo.
