Can't Turn My Laptop Off

edited December 2004 in Hardware
Crazy but what to do. I took out my Bart's PE and but in my ERD
Commander and the laptop is in never never land. It won't cut off
but it won't do anything either. I cut the power but the battery
took over. This is the first laptop I've seen or had and I didn't even
think of that. I got three screws out of the bottom but it just let
two little pieces of plastic come out and there wasn't a battery in
there. How the devil do you cut these things off? I need to boot.
daggon it.

  • Well, do you know the model? We can probably find a guide that tells how to remove the battery. Or just let it sit there and it'll die.

Also, holding the power button in often turns it off.

    Thanks man, that worked.
You can disregard the PM now. I tried holding it in but after you
told me to I held it in a lot longer. You're great SurfinShell23!

  • No problem. Glad I could help. :)
  • Don't you just hate that...

    Why exactly is it there?
  • Windows 98/ME sometimes doesn't like to shutdown, but I don't know what he's going on there...

  • actually ive found that NT oses dont like shuttingdown, specially on my server and bro's computer
  • I'll get that too somtimes, it just lingers (seemingly) forever.

  • the hdd powers down and it sits on the "safe to shutdown your computer". i left it on overnight once to see if it did go off but it doesnt. Linux and 9x shutdown properly though
  • "It is now safe to turn off your computer" means that it unmounted the drives and closed all processes, therefore, no damage will be done by cutting off the power.
  • its an ATX machine, its sposed to shutoff the power for you
  • You sure it's fully ATX compliant? XP always powers off my machine.
  • it powers off when i have 9x and Linux on it, it doeesnt really matter anyways its a server so i dont turn it off

It was booted to Bart's PE and I've had it do that many times
before but on desktops so I could just cut off the power. With
no knowledge of laptops this left me bamboozled.

  • If it doesn't power off automatically, it usually isn't set to do it in BIOS. Check your BIOS settings. Also, if it's an older motherboard model, it most likely won't. 9x usually does it. I wan't able to find it (mother board is from late 90's).
