Swap 2 HDs with XP on Both

edited April 2005 in Hardware
I have 2 PCs, both Compaq 5000 Series. I have a 20GB in one and a 40GB in the other. I want to put the 40GB in the 20GB Machine. Will XP Pro Complain about that? I want to do this because the 20GB Machine is Better... Thanks

  • Might be able to pull it off if they're the exact same PC model.
  • It will complain a lot though, but it might work
  • I tried it and it it kept restarting... Is there another way? Or do I have to hitch the 40 as slave and copy the files?
  • If it's the same, then it should do much.

But since one is a Duron and one is a Pentium III, that's a different mainboard. You're practicly screwed.
  • Yeh, the mobo and drive controller are different, it's not going to work
  • Ones a 5uvme2 and 5012US
  • XP is bluescreening, and the default setting for that is to reboot.

  • The way to make it work is to change the IDE driver to the generic MS ide driver.

That makes it work 99.999% of the time :)
  • Basically, following on from Jay, uninstall all the system drivers for IDE etc, then on the next boot-up in the new machine, Windows will install the new drivers for the hardware.
