AreThree Virus infecting MBR

edited April 2005 in Software
Hello, a computer here at school that had 98 (which died) was resurected by yours truely with windows 2000. Upon installing AVG anti-virus and doing a scan, it found the AreThree virus infecting the MBR. Can Fdisk /mbr from a dos based floppy disk fix this? Does the 2000 cd have any options to erradicate the problem? AVG itself cannot repair the problem. The partition is NTFS. I have reason to believe that this boot sector virus is the reason windows 98 died (on top of just being 98 on a regularly used computer for 4 years). And by die I mean Missing OS.
To get the files off the drive I plugged it into another computer that had windows 2000, it did a scandisk on this drive and after giving it a drive letter I was able to take off all the files that were needed. I then put 2000 on this and it has been working fine. Will this boot virus even affect 2000? From what I have read boot sector viruses hit dos based windows versions much harder then NT based versions.
