For the few times I've had to, I used MySQL (Or as the service was named, "MySql". All I did was run the forum on it, so I wouldn't know anything about it actually.
MySQL 5.x does everything I need it to do, but then again, I'm not the person to ask. The only stuff I really have ever used with a database backend is forum software and blog software.

Although I have heard PostgreSQL is more efficent than MySQL on huge loads, at the same token I have heard its difficult to use.

Because it is common, easy to use, and free.
Never had a problem with it or had a reason to use another server.
