On Vista, whenever I play a sound file (MP3 or whatever), I get this HORRIBLE screechy staticy noise and after I stop playing the file, my speakers continue to give out this HORRIBLE high pitched whine. This continues untill Windows makes a sound (Alert, error, etc), at which point it stops.

The files I'm playing worked perfectly on XP, as did the speakers (more or less). The file I picked was a totally unencumbered MP3 of something long out of copyright.

Try different drivers if you're using an older release or Windows drivers (which you shouldn't)

Excellent, that's one problem down. Now I just have to get DivX sound working and fix WinSAT.

If you have a divx movie with no sound it's probably using an audio codec you don't have like ac3.

Hmm! I seem to be missing an MP3 codec? Any recommendations (Or are they all the same)?

Mostly all the same but I'd look for the LAME codec.

OK, I admit I'm a totall newbie at this. I tried to install the LAME MP3 ACM codec, but I still can't get sound to render.

YAH0000! It works! And it got rid of the crap pixelation!

Now if I can get the "Windows Experience Index" to work, and I'll be set on VVista!

PS. Should I uninstall DivX now that this works with FFdshow?
