Put an abyss server on the web?

edited March 2007 in Software
I've got an abyss server on my mac os x. Is there any way to get it on the web, so you can access it from any pc? My index.html is stored on my os x laptop, I have abyss X1 server for mac os x, my adress (only accessable from my laptop) is 127.0.0.1:8001. It is the ip 127.0.0.1 port 8001. Is there any way to get it online, as I said, to access it from any pc?

PLEASE!!!!!

  • 127.0.0.1 is the "loopback", noone can access it but yourself. If any of us try to go there, we'll end up getting our own machines. Goto some place like http://www.ipchicken.com/ and see what they tell you. Then forward the port in your router and give us your IP and we'll try and access your site.

  • If you want to save the hassle, I can give you web hosting on my server.

    My ip adress is: 172.201.25.167

Do you need any more info?

Zimmy, can you please give me hosting on your server if Q's idea is unsuccessful? I'll let you know later today.

  • OK, now I don't know, but do you have a router or something else between you and the modem? Also, what's you're IP address other then 127. and 175.? It is probably something like 192.168.x.x.

    -Q
  • 192.168.0.1
  • That's YOUR (As in, the server)'s IP address? What's the default gateway listed as?

    -Q

PS. Sorry this is taking this long, but some things I need to know and can't guess.
  • That's my router's ip adress. The abyss server's is 127.0.0.1.
  • Well, your server should have an address along with 127.0.0.1 that starts with 192.168. 127.0.0.1 is the universal loopback (EG. My machine, yours and everyone elses will answer to that IP). Can you access your server from any other machine on your network or vice versa?

    -Q
  • No. Mabey I need Zimmy's hosting? Isn't there any way to get my server online?

    -Alexander Zarach
  • Yes, there is, but you need to configure the operating system properly. If it isn't getting an IP address from your router, there's no way it'll work.

Open Network in System 10 and select your Ethernet (I assume this is wired over standard cable) and ensure it's set to "DHCP".

    -Q

PS. This is 1 version out from what you have, but this shows what I'm talking about: http://its.truman.edu/Image/mac_osx102_dialup/pic2.gif
  • ip: 192.168.0.3
    router: 192.168.0.1
    subnet mask: 255.255.255.0

    Using dhcp

  • Sweet, OK.

Now, go to http://192.168.0.1/ and log in to your router. Then you'll have to set up port forwarding. http://portforward.com/routers.htm should help if your router is from an even minorly known company. If you can't find the exact one, select one close to it in name and number and the instructions should be similar.

Remember, you're forwarding external port 8001 to port 8001 of 192.168.0.3.

    -Q
  • How? I use a netgear dg834g router.
  • Follow the directions on this page: http://portforward.com/english/routers/ ... G/HTTP.htm

Remember, what port you're forwarding and where it's going to (192.168.0.3).

    -Q
  • It says the ip adress is illegal! Should I give up?

    -Alexander Zarach
  • Waitwaitwait (And, no (Respectively)).

OK, who'se throwing the error, the webpage or the router itself?

I have a suggestion. You can get the manual for the router here: http://kbserver.netgear.com/products/dg834gv1.asp

If you want to, you can set up remote management and I'll try and set it up for you (You can also back up the existing settings for the router to be safe).

    -Q
  • Please! How do I set it up? Please can you set my server up!
  • I'm trying. All that's left is the router setup. I don't know what the problem with it is, but I'm interested enough to suggest you get the manual for that router and set up remote management. I'll deal with the rest once you give me the infos (User/pass). You can PM me those so they aren't public, or IM me on AIM.

    -Q
  • Q, My site works perfectly but how did you edit my router settings, as I need these details for when I move to a windows server.
  • Check the manual, it describes almost all of the functions of the router (MUCH better then some I've seen). Look for the part on "Services" or "Virtual Servers" (Whatever Netgear calls it).

    -Q
  • Okay, thanks.
  • Thanks! I couldn't find that section when I looked at my manual.
