PSUs again

OK, my generic PSU is doing something very strange on me. The fan seems to work fine (It blows air out in a steady stream), but the fan makes a short "rrrRRrrr" sound (Not loudly, but just above "barely audible").

Secondly, is it possible to find out the wattage of a PSU without disassembling the machine?

  • Take the side off and look at the label?
  • Both sides are covered with structural supports of the case :(

  • Peel off the sticker of the fan, and oil it. The bearings are probably worn.

If the noise doesn't bother you too bad then it's probably OK. It
may be misaligned just enough to be hittling or dragging on the
housing. Either that or it's a bearing noise.

Secondly, probably not unless you have a tester. I just examined
one and it's written on the top of the cover. The top comes off
my Antec case so it would be visible in it.

Does that work for case fans as well? The sticker on mine
shows no sign of having a small hole under it. I just tried to
replace it with a new 80 mm one I bought but it was too small.
I guess it's 90 mm or 92 mm, probably 90 mm. I'll have to put
up with the bearing sound until I get another replacement I
guess unless I could get some oil to it. I'm fairly certain it's a
sleeve bearing instead of ball bearing so it should quieten
down if I could get some oil in it.

BEWAREZ. I did this to a laptop fan and the fan stopped worknig after two drops.
  • Always worked for me :|.
  • I'd already decided that one drop would be enough. If you put too
much it might get into the motor and yeah, it'd stop then.

    PS: Here's one for $22.99 with a $12.99 rebate = $10.00
