Office 97 ?

edited March 2007 in Software
I don't need the installation files, I have that, I just don't have
anything to install it on. I just wanted to copy it from a machine
it's already installed on.

Someone said that Office 97 would work without being installed
on your machine. I'm not sure if they reallly tried it as a stand
alone but they had used it over the network when it was
installed on a different machine.

Anybody know anything about this? I really love portables.

  • I think it does run without installation. I'm guessing that if you take the whole program folder, it should run it. It may be missing a few things though...
  • Thanks, I'm pretty sure I'm going to give it a shot. It'll look good
in my Portables collection if it works. I really don't care for Open
Office. I don't know if it would install on this OS right now but
somebody said it would install on XP.

Just curious, why don't you like it?
  • For one thing, I'm pretty sure it isn't portable.

The main distribution, no... but a secondary distribution through Portable Apps makes it portable: Open Office.org Portable
  • I second that Thump, I never liked OpenOffice that much either.

My major qualm with Open Office is the fact that no matter what kind of system you run it on, it seems so damned slow due to its reliance on the Java framework.

I know it would be a lot of work to move it to another framework such as the GTK+/# framework or perhaps the Qt framework but it would definitely improve the speed and efficiency of the applications.

I however, do use Open Office on my computer over Microsoft Office.
  • Openoffice is slow full stop.
  • It can open almost anything, hence my preference for it.

I'll second that one, there is nary a format I can't open in Open Office and I do love the Open Document support.
  • I know it goes back to like, WordStar compatibility.

  • I'd prefer OO.org over Office 2007 no doubt, but, I still use Office XP (and 2003 on the tablet pc, just for onenote).

Office X/2004, made of pure win.
