Interesting...

edited March 2010 in Software
So I ran Windows Update as usual, excluding KB970133.

It froze during installation, so I stopped it and rebooted it. When I restarted, my mouse wasn't working, and all my desktop icons were gone.

I checked Windows Update, and one of the updates I was trying to install didn't do so successfully, and I ran Windows Update again and it worked, restarted again.

I plugged my mouse into a different USB port and it started working fine, but I still can't get any icons on the desktop. They aren't missing, because I can still see them all in C:\Users\Jordan\Desktop.

Any ideas?

  • Probably nothing helpful. Windows 7 I presume.
If you'd backed up the system state you could restore it.
  • Fixed, somehow "Show Desktop Icons" in the desktop context menu got unchecked.
  • I've been hearing about this a lot recently. For some reason, Windows 7 just loves to turn off desktop icons...

The reason are the virus-prone updates from WU. I've heard that some viruses installs along them, that some updates can mess up something on the system (Like on Duff's case) :S

That's why I don't trust on them anymore, and I disable them for good, then I install a good AV suite (NIS 2010 or ESET Smart Security 4)...

I've used it and downloaded all the updates (back in 2006, XP SP2), after that my system started to hang and make random BSoD's, so I just reinstalled and disabled WU and no virus or instability happened again :)

Yes, there are many computer experts that can prove that (Several articles from magazines and blogs were published regarding this trough the years), all of them blame WU for system mess and viruses.

Also, as I've said earlier, I've had a bad experience myself with it...
  • I HIGHLY doubt Microsoft is including viruses on Windows Update.
  • Exactly. Stop smoking crack and reading stupid hippy propaganda, Fede.
  • Well I can imagine some viruses getting through security holes in Windows Update... But really now.
  • I know the recent update that BSOD'd a lot of machines was interesting, it wasn't the update that caused the issue (called attention to it though) but the pre-existing infection of a virus in the installation.
  • I really have no idea how people break shit, I don't think I've ever had issues with WU ever. Then again I don't go around using cracked/hacked versions of windows, maybe that's the problem here.
  • Nope. I always used a cracked version and never had a problem with it. I just told it to notify without downloading, and it never gave me shit.
  • Kids are stupid, BOD. That's exactly how shit breaks for them every god damn week.
  • This is true. Never underestimate the stupidity of computer users.

Neither do I. People are like, "I get infected with spyware 10 times a day" and I'm like, "HOW?!"
  • The short answer is russian porn sites.
  • They blindly click yes to everything without paying attention.

There really were viruses that installed trough WU unpatched holes (If I remember, that was when I was updating with WU)

Anyway, I've installed some critical updates yesterday (removing the WAT one) and surprisingly, everything went fine and my PC is a little faster now (altrough I'm using a nLited Win7 version).... So my trust to WU is back again :D

LOL, hey're the most obnoxious (but their porn rocks, only followed by japanese one :)

Also, crack/full download/patch and serial sites are well-known for spreading viruses...
  • What is kids' obsession with japanese porn. Just please tell me it's not animated shit like 512 looks at.

Its the fact that the 20+ year olds look like theyre 12-14, plus the fact that they have that "exotic" look.

    I'm living the fantasy :p
  • I prefer actual asians over the porn, personally.
  • Asian chicks are also used to small dicks so Americans are AWESOME.
  • From a hotfix to asian pricks...

Only on WinBoards would that be possible :p
  • I beg to differ. Anywhere I'm around.

    I feel disturbed.
  • I feel disturbed as well. I hope I'm not alone in this when I say, I really don't need to know what turns you people on.
  • To each their own I suppose :)
