Compaq SR1710NX and Win XP SP3

edited April 2012 in Software
Hi, I have been trying to fix my parents old Compaq SR1710NX (using an AMD processor) for 2 weeks with no success. Everytime I have installed XP SP3 from the CD I made, it has had major system crashes (the computer is sitting idle when this happens), and at first, I thought that AVG was causing the problem, but now, I've noticed that the system crashes are most likely related to SP3. What can I do to fix the problem? I have tried running a different AntiVirus package, but that didn't help. I also ran the PC Doctor 5 hardware test (PC Doctor 4 is preinstalled on the Restore Drive), and its definitely not a hardware issue! I have restored the computer back to factory settings 5 times, and I'm having no luck at all. thanks.

  • I had a similar problem with 2 HP models and by installing the drivers from the official download page works for me. I recommend you use a genuine VL CD the oem CDs sometimes generate this kind of problem.
  • Whats a VL?

I assume they mean Volume License. I would suggest not using a custom XP SP3 disc. Instead try and older SP2 based disc or if all you have is an older SP1 based disc, install that then install SP2 then SP3. That should stop the problem.

But you state you've restored it to factory settings, with original / home made recovery discs or your custom XP disc?
  • I thought VL stood for Volume License
  • That too, brain was away that day it seems.
