xp x64 worth it or not?

edited April 2012 in Software
I recently got a clean Windows XP Professional x64 Edition CD, but since my Intel CPU on my main pc is a 64bit, would it be worth installing? Or is it for 64-bit AMD processors.

  • Check your drivers first, if all of your hardware has XP x64 drivers (Vista/7 64bit drivers will *not* work), then it's fine.
  • Xp 64bit is quite the dog to run at times from what I've read. 64bit software will work on any compatible hardware which has 64bit function, be that AMD or Intel. Software doesn't care for any particular hardware vendor as long as the hardware does what it's meant to do.
  • Waste of time. Pretty much anything that'll run XP64 could run 7.
  • IMO I would rather choose Windows 7 x64 for compatibility and performance reasons.
  • well i don't have enough ram to run windows 7
  • And how much RAM do you have?
  • 2GB of RAM can run Windows 7 x64 smoothly.
  • I only have 504MB RAM
  • Ok... and why do you want to run a 64 bit OS?

Usually the reason I see most people wanting to run 64 bit is so they can take full advantage of having more than 4 GB of RAM.
  • that pc has a intel x64 cpu.
  • Simple answer, upgrade the RAM to the board max, 2 or 4 gig is pretty cheap these days, and if it's an older board it'll probably be 2 gig. But it may be DDR 1 which has seen a price surge in recent times and DDR 2 is going up as well.

The benefits to most people is the higher RAM limit. Although unless you do some hardcore gaming, or video / image manipulation a 32bit system is more than adequate.
  • With this amount of RAM I'd better use Windows XP x86. Having a 64-bit CPU doesn't mean you have to use a 64-bit OS.
