Mac OS 7.6

edited July 2013 in Software
I have tried many times to boot the image on winworldpc.com of Mac OS 7.6 in the SheepShaver emulator, but it just won't boot! I've tried re-downloading, using different un-zipping programs, but it just won't boot!

If someone else can verify this problem, I'll try to find a different source for the image and place it here.

  • I believe (and I may be wrong. Please correct me if I am), that SheepShaver only emulates the PowerPC processor (I know that for a fact), and OS 7.6 needs a 68k processor, which Basilisk II will happily emulate. The website is here: http://basilisk.cebix.net/, and I also find the eMaculation forums (http://www.emaculation.com/forum/) a very helpful place.
  • Early Power Macs could indeed run MacOS 7.x. Supposedly it should run in SheepShaver if you have the right ROM.

MacOS 7.x and 8 (up to 8.1 anyway) had both PPC and 68k code. On a PPC CPU any 68K code ran using a 68k emulation layer.

If the software you want to run is for the 68k CPU then you would likely get better performance from Basillisk II. (otherwise you would be running an emulator inside an emulator!)

Keep in mind some of the MacOS releases were model specific.
