Windows 95 "Windows protection error"

edited August 2013 in Software
"Windows protection error. You need to restart your computer."

That is the exact message I get when I attempt to boot my computer into normal mode. Safe mode still works. Yes, I used the CPU fix. I got the .iso from here, and it is OSR2.1. I think my CD-ROM driver I added was what did it, because it worked fine before. I tried manually reinstalling the fix, but that didn't do anything. I tried changing the CONFIG.SYS and AUTOEXEC.BAT files to NOT load it, but that also did not work. Help? Should I start over?

  • Disregard this thread. I fixed it.
  • The only 2 things I can think of is either a virtualization problem or too much RAM. But since you say you have tried the CPU fix and the OS did work prior I have no idea. The version I set up months ago is Windows 95C and have had no problems with it whatsoever. Here is the direct link to it in the Software Library.

Also, if you prefer a ready-to-go virtual appliance they are also in the library. Head over to Software Library > Abandonware Operating Systems > Virtual Machines > Microsoft Windows. You'll see several, one of which is Win95 (not sure what version) Download and extract it then simply import it into your virtual player.
  • Maybe I should format and switch to 95C. I couldn't get the CD-ROM drivers to work anyway. I might have better luck with C.
