I would recommend running it inside DosBOX. That's where I run WfWG 3.11. Mount a folder as your "C:\" drive and make sure the contents of the .7z file is in a folder there. The change to the folder and run the setup.

    Good luck!
  • I would suggest installing MS-DOS 3 or earlier in your virtual machine, using at max 16mb of ram and no more than 200mb of disk space for a virtual disk drive.
DOSBox is also a good way emulating it too, it just depends on how fast you want everything set up.

So that's why I haven't had much luck running Windows 1.0 on MS-DOS 6.22. It's just not compatible.
  • If I'm not mistaken later versions of DOS changed the internal calls and structures which Windows used so that is to be expected.
  • IIRC DOS 5 is about as far as you'll get with very early windows versions.
  • Make that DOS 3.
  • Windows 1.0x will run under DOS 5 and later (including Win9x DOS 7.x) if you use the SETVER command. Add an entry for "WIN100.BIN" and the reported version as "3.40". (3.40 is what setver defaults to for Windows 2.x's WIN200.BIN).

The only catch with later versions of DOS is that you can not run the command interpreter in a window.
