Backlit Keyboard Recommendations?

edited September 2014 in Hardware
Since I was a high school student, I've had a backlit Logitech G11 keyboard at my desk. This afternoon, during normal use, the "A" key stopped functioning. I am going to do some further testing later, but moving USB ports, even to a different USB bus, did not resolve the issue. I'm currently using an old Dell PS/2 keyboard at my desk.

I'd like to look at a new replacement backlit keyboard. All the ones I've owned in the past are cool for awhile, but a common problem I have with them is after a few years of heavy use, the keys lose their finish and the backlight starts to glow through in places where it shouldn't. I owned a Saitek Eclipse keyboard prior to my Logitech, and that one almost half of the letters were unreadable when I replaced the keyboard.

I'd like a quality backlit keyboard to replace my G11 with. The G11 was starting to have some paint wear issues, but it lasted way longer than the Saitek keyboard did.

Obviously, I can go to NewEgg and search this up, I'm just wondering if anyone has any specific recommendations from what they're currently using and they like.

  • I am already missing the on-keyboard volume control which my G11 had. If I can't find a nice backlit one, I'll probably reorder the keyboard I bought for my old work PC.

  • Quite a few people I know own keyboards like this, but that one's not available on Newegg. Personally, I've been somewhat fond of mechanical keyboards, mainly because they seem to last longer and those with Cherry switches are easier to fix if you want to keep the same keyboard.
As for me, I had a IBM model M keyboard up until about 2 years ago, I'm using a Saitek Eclipse right now that doesn't seem to respond decently when I type compared to my old keyboard.

Edit: This keyboard seems pretty nice. If it requires software however to set it up (I can't tell if it does or not based on the descriptions), I'd be turned off from buying it. Keyboard should do only one thing, be an input device that works on any machine, any OS.
  • I made the switch to a mechanical keyboard this year. At first, I wasn't sure if I liked it, but now, it's amazing.

The only thing that bugs me is the lack of a context menu key and dedicated volume controls.
  • I had one of these until one of the kids screwed it up. Although mine was mine by ZBoard and was backlit.
  • Backlit keyboards are terrible. Not only are most of them horrible rubber dome jank, but generally looking down at the keys is bad practice for actual typing. Touch typing ftw.
