Diskette read error (when there isn't even a diskette drive)

edited May 2014 in Hardware
I have a fairly beat up Dell Optiplex 740. I got it secondhand from my JROTC unit (I'm the ITO, in charge of their computers), and it worked but every time I turn it on it tells me about a diskette read error. But the thing is, there isn't even a diskette drive, let alone a diskette. While this problem persists, I cna't use it as a server like I want because it will stick at the error screen until I press F1 and won't finish powering on. I've tried adding a floppy drive but it didn't work.
Any ideas?

  • Try looking in the BIOS and see if there's a diskette drive "enabled" in there. Sometimes, I have seen BIOSes where there is a setting for what type of diskette drive(s) are present in the machine, and if that's set to a drive type that's not present it will result in an error at boot.
  • Also disable floppy seek if there is a option.
  • Those systems had disable floppy disk options in the BIOS. Use it. :P
