Install Mac OS X into a Virtual Machine

How would I install Mac OS X on a virtual machine?

  • It heavily depends on what versions you are looking at, 10.4 and higher have native intel support and should be easier to coerce.

Newer versions like 10.8 Mountain Lion and 10.9 Mavericks are usually a lot easier than previous ones.

What program do you use for virtualization? What type of CPU do you have?

  • I am using an HP G62 with an Intel i3 quad-core processor, and VirtualBox.

    That's apparently updated somewhat regularly.

From what I can tell, this is far easier with VMWare, I never needed to hack the dmgs to function.
  • Make sure you're using the "Hackintosh" build of OS X. Basically its just OS X with the Darwin bootloader. Some versions used a hacked Kernel but since Lion and up uses the Vanilla (Stock) kernel. Not sure if all of the hardware is supported, at most you'll have to edit some Kext (Kernel Modules/Extensions) by adding the hardware address and vendor info.

Back when I built hackintoshes I used the iBoot CD and a real copy of OS X. I just injected what I needed "driver" wise in the end.
  • Whenever I put the virtual disc into the machine and it boots, I get this terminal thing. It says "UEFI Interactive Shell v2.0. UEFI v2.31 (EDK II, 0x000100000. Revision 1.02", runs some sort of startup script, then gives me a prompt: "2.0 Shell>". I tried the same thing with the HackBoot disc, and it did the same thing.

    I'm trying to boot OS X 10.8.
  • Go to machines settings -> System section and Uncheck 'Enable EFI' . Your problems should be gone now.

  • You probably want to hunt down a darwin iso and boot off of that first.
  • Try this guide.

It uses the iBoot and MultiBeast.
