Crapy Computer OS

edited June 2014 in Hardware
I have an old HP Desktop D 330 PC with the following system spesifications:
CPU:Intel Pentium 4 2.4 GHz
RAM:1 GB
HDD:40 GB IDE Western Digital
Intel HD Graphics
Floppy Drive 3.5'' 1.44MB
DVD and CD drive

I also have two IDE (old) HDDs:
1)Western Digital 998.4 MB
2)Seagate 428.1 MB
I can use them but they are so noisy ang slow.

So, I search for an old Microsoft Windows version to install on it.I believe that Windows NT 4.0 Enterprise Server is the best solution, but I have also thought of Windows For Workgroups 3.11.
I wouldn't like to use Unix, Linux or something like them. I woulg like to use an operating system combatible with Microsoft Windows, even if it is Microsoft DOS.

I prefer it to be old (before 2002) to be fast.Any ideas? :?:

  • I'd suggest Windows 2000. It is more modern than NT 4, but still based on it. Works a lot faster than e.g. XP. Windows for Workgroups is extremely obsolete. I wonder your system is not too new for it... And I also don't suggest server OS's, at least when you are going to use it as an ordinary PC.
  • You're not going to find drivers for that thing for anything other than 2000/XP+. 98 at a push.
  • You can try React OS.
ReactOS® is a free open source operating system based on the best design principles found in the Windows NT® architecture (Windows versions such as Windows XP, Windows 7, Windows Server 2012 are built on Windows NT architecture). Written completely from scratch, ReactOS is not a Linux based system, and shares none of the UNIX architecture.
Or with those spec's you could download Lubuntu and install wine
Wine (originally an acronym for "Wine Is Not an Emulator") is a compatibility layer capable of running Windows applications on several POSIX-compliant operating systems, such as Linux, Mac OSX, & BSD.

    lol, that's still around?

With a little more RAM, it would run Windows XP like a champ. I'll agree with the general consensus that Windows 2000 Professional is a good choice for this machine.
  • You can get by with 1GB to run XP. Just disable the themes, unused or not needed services.
  • I think maybe you guys are forgetting just how old XP was. I remember running XP on 256 MB of RAM and being just fine. 1 GB is definitely enough to run XP without issues.

Yeah, now that you mention it, I do recall at one time my daily driver was a Windows XP machine with 512MB of RAM.
  • 1GB is almost overkill on XP, at least with that CPU.
  • Yup my main desktop was a 2.8Ghz P4HT with 512MB, first laptop was 1.73Ghz Pentium M with 512MB, it was quite doable, hell even ran VMs.
  • I ran XP on 64MB RAM on a vintage Gateway. A little sluggish, but still quite usable.
  • If you have 1 GB RAM, WIndows 7 will run fine. I run 7 on a P3 with 512 MB RAM, and it's just fine.

Your main problem is the stacks of slow JS on websites.
