Longhorn build for real hardware.

edited June 2014 in Software
I just wanted to take this weekend to play around with Longhorn.

Now, can you guys recommend me any build that will work somewhat properly on my desktop?
It's only for this weekend.

Builds i've tried:

3683, 3718, 4008, 4074, 5048 x64, 5112 x64.

I have a spare GeForce 8600GT laying somewhere...

My Full specs:

CPU: Phenom 8450 X3 2.11GHz
GPU: AMD Radeon HD 6450 1GB.
HDD: 1TB Samsung HD103SJ
MOBO: Foxconn M61PMV AM2/AM2+ with nForce 430 and GeForce 6150SE integrated graphics
RAM: 4GB DDR2 SDRAM 800MHz.

As i said i don't plan to keep LH installed, i just want to see it working on bare metal.

  • don't bother with old betas on new hardware, or OSes of that vintage on that hardware anyways.

    get a P4/P3.
  • I can't say any particular build will be more stable than any other. I believe 4093 was the last build before the reboot if you want to see where longhorn was going.

You'll have to make sure your system clock is set to the right timeframe as these were time bombed, may need to install without a network connection until you can ensure it won't automatically update its time.

If it doesn't detect your hard drive you'd have to switch to IDE compatability mode, not sure if AMD systems at the time had an AHCI like interface.

I'd still think virtual machines would be far easier instead of throwing all that hardware at barely functioning operating systems...
  • Well, I imagine it's just curiosity. To see how it runs on real hardware vs a VM.
  • Sure, that's a valid test case, but when the hardware is two years newer than the OS I can't imagine much of a performance hit being virtualized and if anything more stability from the emulated chipset.
  • Thank you guys. I guess i'll just leave longhorn alone. Too much of a headache...

    But thanks anyway!
  • A virtual machine isn't hard.
