Mac OS 9 questions

edited November 2014 in Software
Well, you can call me a wimp, but whatever.
I wanted to find a download for Mac OS 9 so I can be a dummy with it
and have fun with it. (GENERALLY!) :P Then I found this website (aka WinWorld)
which had a download for it but it make me have these questions:

1. Does this need an existing version of Mac OS 7 or some other version
of Mac?

2. Does this have a virus? (dumb question)
and finally,

3. Does Mac OS 9 need a product key or some type of e-mail to install the OS?

If that's the case, I'm screwed. I'M ONLY TEN! :(

But if that's not the case, YAY! thank you for answering.

P.S. And I ain't registerin' at all! Never!

I don't know the answer to that, but I will assume that you don't.
    2. Does this have a virus? (dumb question)

It wouldn't be here if it did.
    and finally,
    3. Does Mac OS 9 need a product key or some type of e-mail to install the OS?

    No.

Maybe you should call the cops on your uncle.
P.S. And I ain't registerin' at all! Never!

    So?
  • Okay. Since you actually admitted you're only ten, I'll cut you some slack for now. Do yourself a favor though and read the forum rules/guidelines if you plan to keep posting here. We don't tolerate stupidity.

If you aren't going to register for whatever arbitrary reason, there is going to be a delay between when you make a post and when it appears, because an admin has to approve guest posts manually.

dosbox answered your questions. Nothing on WinWorld is known to contain malware of any kind, and if it is found it is promptly removed from the library. As far as installing MacOS 9 goes, I'm pretty sure it can be done without an existing installation, it's a full install disc image.

Yes, but it was usually done as "registration". One would have to receive and enter a non-reusable registration code from the company before they could run the software (or launch it more than 10-30 times or so). Usually though this would be done through a variety of means such as phone, snail mail, e-mail, directly dialing in to a registration system, connecting over the internet, etc.

But the effect is the same, once said company goes out of business or stops supporting that software, you can no longer install and run new copies of that software.

Given the sad state of modern OSes and software, asking about what kind of malware a piece of software has is unfortunately becoming an increasingly valid and common question.

With MacOS 9.x do keep in mind that it will only install on certain "supported" models of Apple Macintosh computer. Off hand the only emulator I am aware of that will run MacOS 9.x is "SheepShaver".
  • For OS9 you'll need a PPC mac, generally a G3 model. Newer macs cant run OS7 so it is not needed. If your Mac can run OS7 then I doubt it can run OS9, might be lucky enough to run OS8 or OS8.1.

Just burn the image or use HFSExplorer or Transmac on a PC to make a bootable CD and when booting the Mac hold the C key so it will select the CD-ROM to boot.

Actually, this is not the case. I am running Windows XP with 1GB of RAM
and some type of AMD processor (32bit!) and I'm emulating with VBox.
But for some reason, (oh yeah, I sort of lied. I'm trying out OS 9.2) VBox
said that it could not read the file and is (or) corrupted. Right now I'm down-
loading OS9. AND VMware Player isn't compatible with my OS! >:(

[offtopic] @Duff Sorry, I didn't know that an admin had to verify my threads
and replies. And I just read the guidelines and technically, I shouldn't
be here in the first place.[/offtopic]
  • Dear god this topic is just beyond stupid.

Use Sheepshaver or the like for OS 9 - VirtualBox/VMWare/Virtual PC only virtualizes x86 and does not provide PowerPC emulation.

Let's have a little less stupid here mmkay?
  • well, I don't have a rom for sheepshaver and sheepshaver SUCKED

  • What a bloody moron. It's incredibly trivial to google, and what did you expect? SheepShaver isn't a very good emulator, but it's the only game in town for a classic Mac OS on PPC emulation.
  • well, I don't have a rom for sheepshaver and sheepshaver SUCKED

You can get a bunch of mac roms at http://www.theoldcomputer.com

all it took was a search on Ixquick for "computer roms" (without quotes).

This generation needs to get of their lazy asses and look.
  • thegreatesminer: since the members here did Googling for you I would suggest that you be gracious in this and stop carrying around the attitude. You have no idea that "sheepshaver SUCKED" because you were not able to try it due to lack of ROM.

10 or 100, start using your brain or get off my lawn. Your IP is very close to getting dropped on our banlists. Clean up the lazyness and general pest-sounding ASAP.
  • Some people forget real quick that Apple has only been using x86 architecture for a short while since the Core solo/duo era. Before that time it was strictly RISC based and used processors from Motorola and IBM.
