About truth for Boot ID "MS-DOS 6.0" on DOS 6.0 version

edited December 2014 in Software
I've got original disks of 6.0 as junked diskette only.
I've checked and dumped several version of MS-DOS 6.0.
But I found a few of MS-DOS 6.0 version include Boot ID "MS-DOS 6.0" on Boot Sector instead of "MS-DOS 5.0"

First, I thought that it was a fake or modified version.

Now, it is definitely not true.

The result is as follows :

MS-DOS 6.0 Retail Upgrade (5.25" 2HD or 3.5" 2HD)
--> Boot ID : "MS-DOS 5.0" (No exist Boot ID "MS-DOS 6.0")

MS-DOS 6.0 Plus with Enhanced Tools : aka OEM version with MS original Label (5.25" 2HD or 3.5" 2HD)
--> Boot ID : both "MS-DOS 5.0" and "MS-DOS 6.0"

I have 1 copy of DOS 6 ET with 3.5" and 2 copies of DOS 6 ET with 5.25"

I've checked both 5.25" version of ET. (Labels are each same. No difference found)

But surprisingly, each disk content is different.
I thought each disk must be same.
In other words, no way to distinguish the version with diskette label only.

I've already contributed 5.25" of ET (Boot ID : MS-DOS 5.0) (will contribute another copy of 5.25 of ET as Boot ID "MS-DOS 6,0" later)

My guess is that OEM version of Boot ID "MS-DOS 6.0" must be released at first than Upgrade version.
(HP OEM version also includes Boot ID "MS-DOS 6.0")

I'm trying to get (buy) DOS 6 ET 3.5" version as Boot ID"MS-DOS 5.0"

Comments

  • I always found it odd that DOS 6.xx formats disks using an OEM ID of "MSDOS5.0".

    But yes, there were some disks that turned up with "MSDOS6.0". Likely the result of an OEM duplication program or custom packaging tools.
