dell d530 laptop cpu help

My dell cpu is a 2ghz core 2 duo and it won't run above 598.4mhz. I ran cpu-z and it told my my Multiplier x Bus Speed 3.0 x 199.5 MHz and it should be at FID range 6.0x - 10.0x. I don't know if my cpu is bad or the motherboard. Let me give you all the Processors Information so you can see the whole cpu.

Everything else on the laptop work good but the cpu seem to run slow. I check the bios to see if there any setting and there no settings. I even took it apart to see if there any jumpers on the motherboard and i didn't see any. I check the cpu for overheating and it look good. The little metal plate on the cpu is a little black but not bad. I search the internet but no luck. So i hope someone else has a idea what it could be. Thank you for the help i do get.

  • Sounds like its being throttled, was the laptop overheating?
  • What kind of temperatures are you hitting under max load? You can try that out with prime95, and for monitoring temps I recommend HWMonitor.

How long have you had the machine?
  • I got it off ebay 4 months ago. Had to put a hard drive in it and get a new power adapter and a battery for it. I installed windows xp on it using the dell restore cd. I ran HWMonitor and my cpu is running between 100f to 112f. The motherboard temp running at 90f. I know the cpu fan never runs. I tested it and the fan works but i never hear it or feel air coming out of the vent. The laptop feels cool all the time. I don't know if it overheated at one time and hurt the cpu or the motherboard is bad. I only paid $40.00 for it.
  • If that's the worst it hits even under load, temperatures aren't the problem. I'm sceptic about so precise heat damage that it would leave the machine operational but throttled. While you had the machine open, did you happen to remove the BIOS battery (I'll just go ahead and assume that those are removable in most laptops) to reset any possible settings made by the previous owner?

If not, there's probably a good chance to get that done from the BIOS, give it a try.

Some laptops are so well built that the fan is really quiet and air flows are next to impossible to notice, I wouldn't be too worried about that for the time being.
  • I removed the bios battery and it still doing the same thing. There no setting in the bios for the cpu. The bios just gives me info about the cpu like lowest speed it will run to the highest speed it is. Is there a driver for the speed step on the cpu for windows. Today i put windows 7 on it to see if it would fix it. But it still doing it. I may buy other cpu off ebay for it just to see if that will fix it. Thanks for the help i been getting.

Someone had a similar aged model and they said one of the pins in the power cord were damaged, and that was throttling their cpu down, a new power cord resolved the issue!
  • That's what i think it is, I got a new battery and a after market power supply for it and the battery won't charge and the bios told me it's can't find the dell power supply. I going to buy a dell power supply for it and see what happens.
  • the bios told me it's can't find the dell power supply.
How the blazes would it even figure that? Power supply DRM?
  • Essentially... the brief googling I did about it showed that these power cords are keyed in some way to indicate to the system what their power capabilities are.
  • Power supply i got was a dell replacement adapter from china. It has the right voltage and amps . I am going to my walmarts and get the dell power supply they sell there or i may check ebay and see if they have a cheap one there. That should fix everything. Thanks for the help.
