Trying to fix MBR

edited July 2015 in Software
Well I installed plop bootloader on my AMD Athlon and for some reason it doesn't like it and it crashes. I can't even boot into windows currently. The system has XP pro so I tossed in the CD and it never gives me a option to repair, it just sees it as a new install. Any tips on repairing the MBR?

But if it messed up your partitions, you could have bigger issues.

You could also try creating a Windows XP boot floppy (you DO have a real 1.44mb floppy on your system don't you? :p ) Although you would probably need to play with the boot.ini a bit.

If you boot a Linux CD, you could at least make sure your partition is still there.
  • I just fixed it. Created a Floppy image with Winimage that has NTLDER, NTDETECT.COM and BOOT.INI that points to my primary drive. Changed the bootsector properties to Win NT/2000/XP then saved it. Loaded up Magic ISO and created a bootable CD image that uses floppy emulation. Tossed on a few random files to put something on the disc. Saved, burn and booted. Just need to edit the BOOT.INI and all is well.

I have the same issue. I decide to remove Android-x86 on my system, so I replace grub bootloader with "fixmbr" command. But after all my computer doesn't boot Windows XP at all!
Finally it got working after I format the android partition and Windows.

    i wonder why? :?
  • Use TestDisk (freeware) to repair mbr or search for lost partitions….

A MS-DOS (6.22/Win95/Win98) Bootdisk and the command FDISK /MBR can help also, but TestDisk is much more safe.
