Where is the ISO?

edited August 2015 in Software
Hi,

I'm wanting to install Windows '98 in Virtual Box on Linux, and downloaded the .7z file at the top of the list on this page:

https://winworldpc.com/product/windows-98

After reading the Howto: Install OSes into a Virtual Machine thread I also downloaded the 1.4MB custom Windows '98 install disk from the link contained therein, and have got as far as using it to get to the screen where I start Windows.

How do I get from there, to installing Windows in Virtual Box? I thought that the .7z file I downloaded would contain an ISO image, but it contains the following files, which I seem to have successfully unzipped using p7zip on Linux:

vmware.log
Windows 98.vmdk
Windows 98.vmx
Windows 98.nvram
Windows 98.vmsd
Windows 98.vmxf

Do I now have to create an ISO image using some or all of these files?

  • You downloaded a readymade virtual machine for VMware, not an ISO. (These should be labeled though.)
  • Ah, thanks for the info. I did wonder given the file extensions.

Is there a Windows '98 ISO available to download anywhere in this site?

Yes, select the link with label "Windows 98 Second Edition (Retail Full) " -> https://winworldpc.com/download/F4C2321 ... 04A6F17893

Oh, I have complaint about that previously here viewtopic.php?f=14&t=7672 , hope admins fix it :?
  • Yes, everything else on the Windows 98 page is an ISO image. Unfortunately the archive "content type" field is not displaying right now due to a bug. That would tell you if a download is a VM, ISO, or floppy disk set.

And I would recommend using the "OEM Full" version, as that is self booting.
  • The labeled "Full Retail" ones seems good if you sure want to clean install without any OEM stuff
