Unidentified graphics cards!

edited October 2015 in Hardware
Hello once again! I'm having problems yet again, where I have no clue what to do!

So I've recently acquired some older (2005-ish) computers that did not function, so I decided to pull parts that were not broken and found that 2 of the 7 had some fairly nice hardware, so I decided to keep those. Both had the presumably the same (in appearance, except for board color) graphics card. I was hoping to upgrade one of my other functioning systems, however, the card doesn't seem to have drivers. They are both PCIe (PCI express 16x) and are oddly shaped, with a black metal heat sink. I can upload pictures if, whenever, and wherever needed.

They do seem to be detected as ATi (AMD) Radeon cards by Windows, however it doesn't seem to be able to get much further than the standard generic drivers (No DirectX, no OpenGL, no resolution over 1024x768).

I know these cannot be the limitations of the cards, as there is (my guess) at least 128MB of video memory and every card from 2000 later had at least DirectX and the drivers always add some kind of OpenGL support to it.

Ideas? Questions? I'd love to help identify these cards.

  • Do these cards have a giant, black passive heatsink? If so, I have one of those cards, and I have to identify it as well. All I know is that it's a ATI Radeon (I think?), but that's about it.
  • Go in device manager, select the card and go into properties, select the Details tab and select then select the Hardware Ids tab. Look at the PCI and Vendor numbers. They look like this

    PCI\VEN_10DE&DEV_0DE1&SUBSYS_0828196E&REV_A1

For a example 10DE is the PCI and 0DE1 is the Vendor and it tells me my device is made by nVidia and its a GT Geforce GT 430.

Go to this link to find out the device info.
  • I've found some data, however I'm still not sure.

Upon doing the unthinkable and clipping off a bit of the card's edge connector and installing it into the PCIe x1 slot on my Gateway 500GR, Windows recognizes it as an ATi Radeon X300/X550/X1050, but I'm not sure what model it is exactly, and Windows reports being unable to drive displays through it because of 2 instances of the driver being in memory.

Another question, has anyone ever heard of chipset graphics being put on a card? I'm thinking sort of but not exactly an Intel i945 on an AGP or PCI card. Has this ever happened before?

Yes, both are the same and have a large passive heatsink.
  • It's a Radeon X series and something tells me you used a PC with Win7 and there isn't really any support for Win7 since the card is so old. Chances are it's a X300 or X550.

    GPUs are chipsets.
  • Uhhhh, I've used the built-in drivers for a Radeon X1650 and a Radeon 9800XT, and forced the Mobility Radeon 9000 drivers on a Mobility Radeon 7500. It works fine.

The built in drivers for the graphics card don't seem to work, though they are installed properly.

Apparently, the drivers are loaded twice.
