It appears that most (if not all) avatars were wiped from the server, along with some emoticons. Attempting to upload avatars from the local machine will return nginx errors, so one is required to use an image hosting service to upload avatars.

Stitch is moving a lot of things around right now, and the dust hasn't settled yet.

It is probably best just to wait until everything is finished before worrying about it or messing with your settings.

(My avatar seems to still work fine :P )

The current webserver setup is not lasting much longer. I will review this bug further when the new webserver is fully in place.
