Future build

edited January 2016 in Hardware
A while back I got a broke iMac G5. I have gutted it and kept the case, power supply and even de-soldered the USB, Firewire and Ethernet connectors from the motherboard. I've seen build guides on people tossing in a Intel Nuc into these cases to have a Hackintosh but I plan to use it for a Raspberry Pi. However just not one but several. My plan is to use a Pi2 and have a small array of the Pi Zeros, kinda like a mini cluster server per say but at the same time not. In other words a bunch of systems I can manage with the main Pi board and use the mini network array to run things like a webserver, media and so forth.

The only issue I forsee is finding a LCD for the case.

  • How about this? http://store.qkits.com/usb-message-board-kit.html

I've been to their physical location when I was in Canada on holiday and they might have what you're looking for. Their shipping is pretty reasonable to the US ($7.95).

Actually, that looks like a good deal. Turning a Power Macintosh into a Power Pi? From Apples come Raspberries...
  • This might be a better choice. It's a 5" HDMI display with 800x480 resolution, specifically designed for the Pi.

  • I could use a HD44780 display for that fuction, just tap into the GPIO of the Pi or even use a Micro controller and pick in between the array.

5" is too small for graphical use with my bad eyes I would need atlest 10" but the iMac case uses a 17". However a 10" with a few HD44780 LCDs on the right side of the main LCD panel and something like status LEDs on the bottom it would look like a sweet control panel.

I found a 10" display, it's (obviously) more expensive though.

  • I started to think about it some. A 13 inch would work fine and come to think of it I have a touch diffuser laying around that I could simply add a off shelf touch controller. Bigger screen but I would have less room for the smaller HD44780 LCDs.

Hmm... I can't find any 13" monitors for the Pi, although I do see some "touchscreen" monitors. A 10" would probably work fine, but the bigger the better. The 13" screen is only 3" bigger than the 10", and probably wouldn't be the best deal.
