{Poll} Emulation or GOG/Steam for Playing Classic Games

edited September 2016 in Software
Hello all,

I was wondering everybody's preference when it comes to playing classic MS-DOS and early Windows (ie Win95, Win98) games on modern hardware. I am focusing on the times when either you don't have access to vintage hardware (say your at school, at a friend's house, etc), or if you don't have any hardware to play the games on.

Just to clarify, by Emulation I mean DOSbox for DOS games and VirtualBox (or any other virtualization software) for Win9x. However, most of these games are also available on Steam and GOG (such as DOOM/DOOM][, Duke3D, Half-Life, etc), and are either optimized for new hardware.

Thanks,

  • afaik GOG uses a custom version of DOSBox anyway

That actually makes sense, and I guess that would be the easiest thing to do. Although, I would think doing what Steam does (making the games compatible with modern Windows) would yield better performance.
