How to restore modified Rampage game disk with RAMPHI.DAT
edited October 2016 in Video Games
This is version 1.0 and RAMPHI.DAT is modified.
This is untouched RAMPHI.DAT.
How to restore (recover) modified Rampage game disk by replacing RAMPHI.DAT?
First you must need two disks.
(But do Not try to recover disk on original disks.)
One is modified disk copied from original media by KF/SCP/TC.
Two is untouched disk copied from another disk.
If you have 2 drives of 5.25", you don't have to use Hard Drive.
I assumed that you have 1 dive of 5.25"
Copy RAMPHI.DAT from untouched disk
Run PC-Tools 4.xx
Change Drive Path by F10 (C:\)
RAMPHI.DAT was copied on C:\
Insert modified disk and select RAMPHI.DAT. then press 'C' to copy the Target drive. (Select Target Drive as A:)
Press 'R' key if replace.
Press 'F10' and Drive Latter 'A'
Select RAMPHI.DAT and press 'E' to edit.
Press 'F1' to toggle
Press 'F3' and to edit.
*You must replace modified disk with untouched disk. <<-- Insert untouched disk.
Then press 'F6' to cancel edit. (Do Not press 'F5', then untouched disk must be modified.)
Memory dumped sector is shown with untouched one.
-->Then replace untouched disk with modified one.
Press 'F5 to edit, sector will be updated.
Original untouched RAMPHI.DAT is written on Sector 100. (Based on version 1.0 of Rampage)
This screenshot is based on version 1.0 (Version 1.1 or 1.2 may be variable.)
Can you also provide the correct data of this sector ?
Like this :
psi rampage.td0 -r 5 1 2 -p save HI.DAT
RAMPHI.DAT --> Original untouched file
T0H0S6.SEC --> Sector file on Track 0 / Head 0 / Sector 6 (Root Directory Area)
T5H1S9.SEC --> Sector file on Track 0 / Head 0 / Sector 6 (RAMPHI.DAT Area)
But RAMPHI.DAT is in T5H1S2 on my floppy, not T5H1S9.
PC-Tools shows this file is in Disk Abs Sec 100, too.
Maybe your filename is a typo.
BTW, there are also v1.1 and v1.2 of Rampage.
Do you know what's the different of them ?
Another question, do you know what is the file "XEMAG.SYS" ?
This file seems not needed to run the game.
Oops. sorry my mistake.
File name should be T5H1S2, hehehe.
I assume in many cases an untouched disk is needed.
I also have several diskettes in which boot root ID is modified. Perhaps disks were placed unprotected in Windows machine. This is the case on all of my DOS Simcity + scenario disks.
I am able to sometime notice modified tracks when I dump by KF and then create .IMG from stream files using KF java console.
Thanks for guide.
Yes, you're right.

In this case, many of users tried to accees the disk on Windows 9x/NT via FDC without
write protection knob on disktte. (Drive is A: or B:)
But there is no need to worry via KF / SCP.
