Norton utilities standard edition version 4.5?

edited November 2016 in Software
I have an old computer manual which says "the norton utilities standard edition 4.5" on the internet I can't find anything about the standard edition , but i know that the advanced edition exists. I know the advanced version and the standard edition both came out in 1988, I knew about the advanced edition coming out in 1988, I know the standard came out in 1988 as well since that's the copyright of the standard edition book. Why doesn't it seem that the standard edition seem to exist to exist on the internet at all? I didn't even knew the standard edition existed of version 4.5 until someone gave me the manual to the standard edition and also the floppies to it , which i ended up selling to some collector.

When you talk about SE 4.5 , Do you mean there was a second edition of norton utilities 4.5?

    Nope, it means Standard Edition.

I used to have Norton Utilties Standard Edition 4.50 with time stamp (10-16-1988).
  • Each version of NU 4.0, NU 4.5 and NU 4.51 (it's later edition of 4.5 with the time stamps 4.51) had both variants - standard and advanced edition.

Standard edition didn't include the following utilities: FR (Format Recover), SD (Speed Disk) in version 4.0 and starting from 4.5 NDD (Norton Disk Doctor)

I have a folder dump of NU 4.5 Standard Edition, but not sure if this upload will be accepted here at WinWorld

    Known versions:

    The Norton Utilities v4.0
    03-01-1987, 4:00:00
    05-15-1987, 4:00:00

    The Norton Utilities v4.5
    10-16-1988, 4:50:00

The Norton Utilities v4.51 (even though it has a string "Advanced Edition 4.50 dated Tue 10/11/88")
    01-03-1989, 4:51:00

NU 4.5 had at least 2 (maybe more) different builds.

The advanced edition is on here, so the standard edition should be fine to get uploaded

I was on a website that the gives builds for the 4.x builds :

    NU 4.x
Norton Utilities v4.0 Standard Edition (1987-03-01)
Norton Utilities v4.0 Advanced Edition (1987-03-01), 32 files including demo
Norton Utilities v4.0 Advanced Edition (1987-05-15) - update or incomplete, contains 6 updated utilities + Norton Commander demo
    Norton Utilities v4.01 Standard Edition (also 1988-05-15 ?) - ??
Norton Utilities v4.01 Advanced Edition (1988-05-15)
Norton Utilities v4.5 Standard Edition (1988-10-16)
Norton Utilities v4.5 Advanced Edition (1988-10-16) - original version, available from the BA ftp
Norton Utilities v4.5 Advanced Edition (1989-01-03)
    Norton Utilities v4.51 Standard Edition (1989-01-03 ?) - ??
Norton Utilities v4.51 Advanced Edition (1989-01-03)
Norton Utilities v4.5 Advanced Edition (French), 1989-05-01, timestamp in files - 1988-10-11. Could it be official translation ?
Norton Utilities v4.5 Advanced Edition (German), timestamp in files - 1988-10-11. Same as French - is it official localisation ?
Norton Utilities v4.5 Advanced Edition (Russian), timestamp in files - 1988-10-11. Definitely not official. Few utils are still in english.
Norton Utilities v4.51J Advanced Edition (Japanese) - ?

The simple reason why is that everyone wanted the Advanced edition. :P

Also, the standard edition may not be clearly labeled as "Standard Edition", so people would not know what to call it. I have a set of Standard Edition 4.0 disks here, and they don't say that on the labels. Just "The Norton Utilities Version 4.0".

Yes, no "Standard Edition" is mentioned on disk label.
I also have this disk too.

When i had the norton utilities standard edition 4.5, I remember they did say standard edition on the disks as well , on the 5.25" disks and also the on the 3.5" as well
  • About Norton Utilities 5.0 (1990-07-17) (5.25-360k) that's "presumably beta".

It is not beta. According to pcmuseum.ca release date is 11/01/90, but it's incorrect. This version went on sale in August 1990. PNCI planned to release it in June or July, but release date was slightly delayed due to merge with Symantec.
  • @SokilOff

    Thanks for the information.
Your uploaded 5.00 (07-17-1990) seems not to beta release.
I have bbs dumped file of it and compared with yours.
Yes, all files are correct and verified.

    http://scenelist.hopto.org/1990_08.html

According to Humble Guy's BBS, Norton Utilities 5.0 seemed to be released in Aug and uploaded on 08/05/90.

Also I have another disk of Norton Utilities 5.00 (09-25-1990)
All file contents are same as yours but it is litte different disk from yours.

I'll upload another disk image with scan shot soon.

This item was sold. But you can see disk label.
  • Well, if it was released before the release date then it is a pre-release. Perhaps they didn't actually use it for testing purposes, but that would just be arguing semantics (Symantecs?).
  • @SomeGuy.

I also thought the release version (07-17-90) was beta release.

You can see the READ.ME on disk 6.

"If you still encounter an error, please call our Customer Service at
    1-800-365-1010."
    "Manual Corrections and Changes"

I think there is no reason to mention "Customer Service" and "Manual Corrections and Changes" on beta version.

    Exactly.

    1. Printed manuals were included in the final retail or oem versions only.
    2. Beta-testers never work with the customer (or end-user) support service.

Beta version of NU 5.0 is existed, but it was released around March - Arpril 1990.
  • They have two really interesting items.
Norton Utilities 1.0?, 5.25" that "has a $0.13 stamp on registration post card, Manual © 1982, 1983. While we suspect this is the 1.0 product, we don't know."
    Strange item. It's NU 2.0 that's released in 1983.
First few utilities have been created in 1982. It was possible to buy each utility separately.
    DISKLOOK demonstration, 5.25" disk only
where "Label says it contains BatHide, Beep, Bload, Clear, DiskOpt, DL, FH, FilFix, FileSort, HL, HM, HU, Label, Lprint, Reverse, ScrAtr, SM, SSAR, TimeMark and UE. Includes original disk sleeve with a very young Peter Norton"
According to the list it should be version 2.0. But it also needs verification.

Later versions aren't that rare. I'll upload NU 3.0. Yet it also had at least three different builds (maybe more).
