[Request] IRIX 6.5
Hi:
I have an old SGI Indy that I would like to get running. I've been looking for IRIX 6.5 for several years now so I was very happy to find the Foundation 1 & 2 ISO images here. Unfortunately the rest of IRIX 6.5 wasn't available. So if anybody has IRIX 6.5 and wouldn't mind sharing it, I would be most grateful. Thanks in advance.

Of course, I have no way of testing those and I believe nobody else here has anything that can run those. So any insight or information that you can provide about these is very welcome.
what it's like to get an idea of what to do now that they're only a shell of the old SGI.
I've never even seen an Indy -- oldest SGI I've seen is an Indigo 2, but I don't even have one
of those, but from what I read it looks like you can run up to 6.5.22 on the Indy.
6.5.22 was freely available, and I recall downloading it from sgi supportfolio at work (on a T1)
when it came out. There were releases up to 6.5.30, which I have seen install bits for, but
I've never seen actual media for that.
I do have a complete kit for IRIX 6.5.14 that came with my Octane from ebay in like 2003 or so.
There are a pile of disks so I'm not trying to spread this copy, but there should be enough
online to get an install going. For reference though, I'll list the disks in a 6.5.14 kit first, so
you'll have an idea of what a complete system should have come with:

---
Note the stuff with "November 2001" .. those are what makes this kit 6.5.14.
Teleffect is a program that lets you use your SGI's mouse to control windows boxes
(think synergy), the ONC3/NFS disk is required if you want NFS support.
The freeware discs are just opensource stuffs from 2001 compiled for irix.
The demos disks have various opengl programs and such to show off the machine,
like buttonfly and powerflip etc.
What happens when you select "Install System Software" if you have the installation tools
and overlays disk 1 in the drive is that it should copy the miniroot off the cd to the swap slice
It might not work out if you haven't got a swap partition on the disk yet.
On a brand new disk, you can't click that button, but have to go to the command monitor,
and boot the standalone shell (sashARCS). The command for that requires you know the
scsi id of the cdrom, but there are examples to be found here:
http://software.majix.org/irix/install-fx.shtml
If you can't work out what they are, use hinv from the command monitor, and it should say.
Or you could post the hinv output and someone can probably help construct such a command.
In case the disks on winworld aren't imaged properly (no idea, never used those copies), you
might try the installation tools and overlays from IRIX 6.5.1 which can be found on archive.org
here:
https://archive.org/download/sgi_IRIX_6 ... 201998.img
Key point being, if you partition your disk so that you have a (probably at least 128mb or so) swap
slice, you can load the miniroot, and that's what the icon in the prom menu tries to do, but it can't
if you don't have a swap slice. If you have a dead nvram battery, you might have some lost settings.
printenv shows the settings, setenv sets a setting, resetenv resets settings to default.. some reference
can be seen here:
http://csweb.cs.wfu.edu/~torgerse/Kokua ... /ch09.html
If you can get into the miniroot, then you can worry about satisfying inst with the correct
media.
According to:
http://www.futuretech.blinkenlights.nl/6.5inst.html
the only disks you absolutely need are:
Installation Tools
Foundation 1
Foundation 2
Applications
Let us know how you get on.
Apparently this is the Original 6.5 (no point release) Installation tools disk...
IRIX 6.5 Installation Tools June 1998

So... I suppose .. your wish has been granted...
I've never done an install using that raw 6.5, always used the overlay disk 1 as installation tools, but, there you are anyway.
One point to mention, these Irix media are not "ISO 9660" but are instead efs images, so be careful when burning them to cd.
Here is a (hopefully?) complete set of IRIX 6.5.6 media found on archive.org. Hopefully they imaged them properly, but again,
I've never used this media to do an install, but... worth a shot for a second route independent of the ones on winworld (or if you
are a winworld mod, feel free to duplicate them here if you like... I have no idea, I didn't put these here, simply found them).
The only thing that seems to be missing compared to my 6.5.14 kit is the demo disks, which on mine are noted 6.5.9 and
6.5.12, so presumably they didn't ship demo discs with Irix media in the 6.5.6 era. I therefore believe this is a full kit, and,
your 6.5.22 overlays should be able to take this all the way up to the lastest an indy can go. Enjoy!
